HealthMarkets Helps Caring for Children Foundation

One in four Texas children is at risk of contracting vaccine-preventable disease.  These children go without the necessary immunizations to lead healthy, happy lives due to a lack of affordability and access to medical care. Yet immunizing children is one of the most direct, simple and least expensive ways to build healthier futures for medically underserved families in Texas.

That is why HealthMarkets is excited to support the Caring for Children Foundation’s Care Van® Program. Using its fleet of ten specially customized mobile immunization Care Vans, the Care Van Program is able to complement traditional "brick and mortar" clinics by visiting schools, churches, restaurants, recreational parks, shopping centers, public housing, community events, etc. and conduct immunization outreach clinics in the communities where these at-risk families live and work.

The brightly-colored, kid-friendly vans are staffed by contract nurses, EMTs and other licensed health care providers from the local communities who provide the immunizations screening and immunizations. In addition to offering free childhood immunizations for children 2 months through 18 years old, the Care Van Program also provides health, nutrition and exercise education as well as offers free health screenings at most of its health education community events. These health screenings provide a variety of health services including blood pressure checks, body fat and strength tests to thousands of children.

Since the program launched in 1997, more than 842,000 immunizations have been provided to a half-million children in nearly 38 counties across Texas. More importantly, this program brings hope and help to our state’s uninsured and medically underserved children.

HealthMarkets is proud to support the Caring for Children Foundation of Texas, Inc. in their efforts to help the uninsured and medically underserved children in Texas have a chance to lead a healthier life.
