HealthMarkets Helps United Way of
Tarrant County

HealthMarkets is excited to continue our ongoing relationship with the United Way of Tarrant County through our sponsorship of the Imagination Library program. HealthMarkets’ contribution enabled the United Way of Tarrant County to provide more than 2,000 new books to 170 children in our local community throughout 2010.

Imagination Library was developed in 1996 by Dolly Parton in her native Tennessee. She wanted to foster a love of reading in children from birth to age five and ensure they have books regardless of the families’ income. The United Way of Tarrant County partnered with the Dollywood Foundation and the Imagination Library program was launched locally in August 2008.

One of the central goals of the Imagination Library program is to increase the number of literacy experiences for children in participating households. Every child enrolled in the program receives a new quality children’s classic book, addressed directly to them, each month to read and keep as their own. Through this program, the books provide a unique opportunity for parents, older brothers or sisters, grandparents, babysitters and others to do something simple, yet powerful in the lives of preschoolers – to inspire them to read. In addition to the books the children receive, parents also receive effective early literacy/learning techniques that provide family tips and activities.

The United Way has put a stake in the ground on education. They believe that education is the cornerstone of individual and community success. It’s essential to getting and keeping a job with a livable wage and health benefits. And it’s fundamental to a community’s economic prosperity. Their local goal is to achieve 20% more on-time graduations from United Way selected high schools by 2020. And children entering kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed are more likely to graduate from high school. The United Way, through programs such as Imagination Library and other early-learning programs, is working to boost every child's chance for success in school, work and life.

HealthMarkets is proud to support the United Way of Tarrant County and support their strategic plan which focuses on meeting the high-priorities needs of the local communities and areas where the United Way believes its strengths and resources will make a significant difference in the lives and community conditions.
