HealthMarkets is proud to support Trinity Habitat for Humanity and their work to revitalize local neighborhoods by building quality workforce homes and rehabbing existing homes with qualified partner families, volunteer labor and donations of money and materials. Trinity Habitat for Humanity builds and rehabs homes in Johnson, Parker, Tarrant and Wise Counties in Texas.

Trinity Habitat has partnered with 1,426 families through their Build A Home program (new home construction) and their Preserve A Home program (external rehabs, weatherizations, disaster relief, scrape & paint projects) as of December 2014. Trinity Habitat has built 540 new homes for 1,632 people, including 962 children, all of whom now have a place to call home at a price they can afford. In addition, 855 families have a rehabbed home that not only has greater curb appeal but many have better structural integrity and are more energy-efficient, and thus more affordable.

In early 2015, Trinity Habitat for Humanity launched its BuildStrong neighborhood revitalization initiative in partnership with the Hillside Morningside, Carver Heights East and Como neighborhoods in Fort Worth. Trinity Habitat is working alongside existing residents, other community organizations, future homeowners, sponsors and volunteers to dramatically change the overall composition of each neighborhood. Existing home rehab projects will quickly change the streetscapes and new homes will replace vacant lots or dilapidated rental units with homeowner-occupied houses. When homeownership increases, crime rates are reduced, education is improved and communities thrive.

Teams of HealthMarkets volunteers have worked on both the Build a Home and Preserve a Home types of Habitat projects:

habitat-1Build a Home

The Build A Home program is unique in that it is built around the concept of self-help and a hand up, not a hand out. Partner families must earn 30%-60% of the Area Median Income. No other organization in our service area provides the same or similar program for families in this income range. Our partner families average three to four persons and earn $27,120 annually, placing them at 43% of the Area Median Income.

Having a safe and decent place to live can bring stability and promise, family unity, hope and a foundation from which individuals can reach their full potential. Tangible evidence shows that the Habitat program makes a difference for this generation and the next. Studies show that children of homeowners read and behave better as families rise above the poverty level. Their social skills improve and their social life becomes more normal. They are less likely to be on welfare as young adults and more likely to attend college. Trinity Habitat for Humanity builds quality workforce homes in partnership with hardworking families and sponsor and community volunteers.

habitat-2Preserve a Home

Preserve A Home projects include exterior rehabs and Cowtown Brush-Up projects in partnership with the City of Fort Worth. The Preserve A Home program was developed in response to an overwhelming need in urban neighborhoods to help fixed-income homeowners, many of whom are elderly or disabled, who struggle to maintain and care for the exterior of their homes. These homes have fallen into disrepair, often into code citations, loss of homeowner insurance, loss of equity and ultimately could face mortgage foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners earn 60% of the Area Median Income or less. The homeowners, if able, work alongside sponsor and community volunteers and our construction team to rehab their homes.
