HealthMarkets employees drill wood for siding.

Como Neighborhood Area of Fort Worth

HealthMarkets had the pleasure of participating in another “Build a Home” project for Trinity Habitat for Humanity on November 3, 2017. I was excited to see so many employees volunteer to help provide a safe and quality home for a deserving family. We take pride in offering hands-on support for projects that improve our community and provide employees with volunteer paid time off to make this happen!

This year’s build took place in Fort Worth’s Como Neighborhood on what was a brisk Friday morning. But the chill in the air didn’t stop employees from showing up and being ready to get to work. We were met by the project leader and several skilled volunteers from Habitat who gave us our safety guidelines and assignment for the day. The whole group had to install siding on the house, which meant using a lot of plywood, nails, and hammers. This was a very important job in the building process as it sealed up the house so the crew could start working on the inside. In no time, employees were putting on their tool belts, hard hats, gloves, and safety goggles to start working on different sections of the house. We were told the homeowner had to work a long shift that day, so he unfortunately couldn’t join the team. The homeowner had already put a lot of “sweat equity” into building his house, and we carried on the labor with him in spirit.

By the end of the workday, we managed to put up siding on the majority of the house with the guidance of the Habitat crew. All the cutting and nailing of plywood was worth it because we took part in providing a family with a home they can be proud of. (For some of us, this was the first time using power tools to cut and drill!) It’s a very humbling experience to know that our efforts will help give a family a comfortable, safe place where they can make many good memories.

We look forward to continuing our company’s culture of team building among our employees through volunteering for community programs such as the “Build a Home” project for Trinity Habitat for Humanity. I definitely hope to be back with more of our high-spirted HealthMarkets employees for the next home build!
